Training programme on Bioremediation

(Organized jointly by Corporate HSE, ONGC and ONGC TERI Biotech Ltd)

held on 24th June 2011 at TERI, New Delhi & TERI Gram, GualPahari

Despite the pre-eminent efforts of the oil industry and regulatory authorities, several incidents of oil spills have been reported. The recent oil spill of British Petroleum Oil Company (BP) in Gulf of Mexico created a major environmental problem. Due to the above oil spill, BP not only incurred a financial loss of over 20 billion US dollars but there were other uncalculated losses. This was a major setback for the company and its share value in the international market dropped drastically.

With this background in view, OTBL & Corporate HSE, ONGC jointly organized a full day Training Program on 24th June, 2011 on "Bioremediation Techniques" at TERI, New Delhi & TERI Gram, GualPahari, Gurgoan, with primary focus to facilitate improvements in oil spill preparedness and response arrangement.

The Program which was attended by 36 senior officials of ONGC and OIL brought together the main users from ONGC Assets, namely, Ankleswar, Mehsana, Ahemdabad, Cauvery &Rajamundary and Oil India Ltd to focus together on the issue of developing essential elements of oil spill preparedness and response and on ways & means to tackle day to day problems of oil spills especially in farmer’s field where preparedness & immediate response for cleanup is considered a must.

The Program provided an excellent opportunity to the participants to better understand and review the actions that they were already taking and the planned strategies to meet evolving oil industry expectations. The participants were also exposed to films on environment protection.

The participants were also addressed by Mr. Andrew S. Ball, visiting Professor from Flinders University, Australia, on the current trends and practices in Bioremediation in Australia.

The participants were taken around various labs and ‘Oilzapper’ production & tissue culture facilities of TERI for a first hand knowledge of the bioremediation processes.

The Program which culminated with a musical evening was well received by the participants.
